This Week We Are Spending ‘A Day In The Life Of ‘ Liz Lawson, Our Talented Mystic Meg Who Uses Her Crystal Ball Of Psychometric Tests To Assess Leaders And Their Future Potential.
WHAT DO YOU DO LIZ?
There are two key aspects to what I do. I primarily recruit for senior finance roles, but for clients with whom I have a long-term relationship, I will recruit for other (non-finance) senior roles. I also assess senior leaders to understand their suitability/fit for a role that they are being considered for, using psychometrics and other proven tools and techniques. This provides my clients with a robust process and outcome on which to base their recruitment, promotion and development decisions.
HOW DID YOU END UP WORKING AT ROTHERAM CARRINGTON RECRUITMENT GROUP?
Sarah, Amy and I go way back – we previously worked and trained together at one of the big national recruitment firms. We then went our separate ways to pursue different interests and career paths, before coming back together again to grow Rotheram Carrington Recruitment Group. I joined most recently to bolster our senior finance focus and to lead and develop our bespoke leadership assessment and profiling division.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
Doing my job to a very high standard to ultimately get the best outcome for my clients and candidates. I love finding candidates their dream job, and clients a great candidate. I love assessing people to really understand what makes them tick and giving them constructive feedback to help them further develop, and I get a buzz from positive feedback (who doesn’t?), knowing that I am adding value. I also love working as part of the Rotheram Carrington Recruitment Team – we share the same values, we work really hard, and we support and encourage each other.
WHAT’S THE BEST BIT ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love the variety; business development, relationship building, managing recruitment assignments, assessing really interesting people, and working as part of a fab team.
WHAT IS YOUR PET HATE IN BUSINESS?
Poor recruiters i.e. those who are just in the industry to make a quick buck, can create a negative perception of the recruitment sector. This frustrates me as it can make it harder to convince potential clients that we, at Rotheram Carrington Recruitment Group genuinely have their best interests at heart.
WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF WORK ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Do a job you enjoy! If it’s no longer enjoyable, do something else. Life is too short!
WHAT MOMENTS IN YOUR CAREER STAND OUT?
Getting my first job in recruitment, and discovering, by chance, that I was pretty good at it! Making the brave decision to leave my recruitment career (at the time) to study for a full-time Masters Degree in Occupational Psychology and then landing my dream job in talent assessment and development. Travelling abroad to deliver assessments for global businesses. Working with great teams. Now being part of building and developing a new business, which is exciting, challenging and rewarding.
WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS ROTHERAM CARRINGTON RECRUITMENT GROUP APART FROM ITS COMPETITION?
We’re a small, independent business with big ambitions to grow. Reputation is everything. So, everything we do, we do well. We only work on candidates and jobs where we know we can provide an excellent service. Our assessment/profiling service offering also stands us apart from most recruitment businesses. Clients access our bespoke assessment services as part of our recruitment offering and independently to this. For example, often clients that are handling their own recruitment, like to use our robust assessment process to ensure they select the right people.
